The USA Foundation’s commitment to the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine represents one of the most consequential investments in the future of healthcare for the University of South Alabama and the Gulf Coast region. Through a $40 million total investment, the Foundation has helped ensure the continued growth of the College of Medicine and its ability to educate the next generation of physicians.
The Foundation’s investment reflects a clear understanding of what is at stake: expanding the College of Medicine’s capacity to educate more physicians and address the growing healthcare needs of South Alabama and the Gulf Coast. A significant percentage of Whiddon College of Medicine graduates remain in the region to practice medicine. Each additional graduate, therefore, creates a lasting impact, strengthening healthcare access, improving patient outcomes, and supporting healthier communities across the region.
In 2021, the University of South Alabama approached the USA Foundation to participate in a transformational effort: the development of a new facility for the Whiddon College of Medicine. The proposed building would allow the University to expand enrollment, modernize instructional spaces, and continue to prepare students for the evolving demands of medical education. Recognizing both the urgency and opportunity, the USA Foundation Board voted in October 2021 to make a $30 million commitment to support the project. This decision reflected the Foundation’s role as a steadfast partner to the University, particularly in moments of significant institutional need.
As construction progressed, additional needs emerged to ensure the facility could fully meet its intended purpose. In December 2025, the Foundation Board approved an additional $9.33 million to complete the fifth floor of the Whiddon College of Medicine building, allowing the facility to operate at its full potential and support future growth.
In June 2026, the Foundation Board gave an additional $670,000 bringing total contributions to date of $37 million of a total commitment of $40 million.
With this decision reinforces The Foundation’s dedication to strengthening healthcare education across the region.
